Description and Symptoms

While trying to update Windows 10 chances, you may face the error 0x80070422 which prevents you from updating your Windows. The error is often eliminated after installation of updates or the entire Windows 10 operating system. The error might also appear when trying to check for updates, and sometimes when installing apps from Microsoft Store.

Causes of this Error

We know what causes this problem – in almost all cases, the culprit is the Windows Update service or another service pertaining to Windows Update not running.

Fixing “0x80070422” on Windows

Try each of these methods one after the other, and see which helps you fix the issue.
Fix #1: Configure the Windows Update service to start automatically
  1. Press the Windows Logo key + R to open a Run.
  2. Type services.msc into the Run dialog and press Enter to launch the Services Manager.
  3. Scroll down the list of services, locate the Windows Update service and double-click on it to open its Properties.
  4. Open the dropdown menu in front of Startup type: and click on Automatic to select it.
  5. Click on Apply, and click on OK.
  6. Close the Services Manager. Restart the computer.
Fix #2: Disable Network List Service
  1. Press Windows Key + R and then type services.msc and hit Enter.
  2. Now locate Network List Service then right-click on it and select Properties.
  3. From Startup Type drop-down select Disabled and then click on Stop.
  4. Click Apply followed by OK.
  5. Restart your computer to save changes.
Fix #3: Disable IPv6 in Network Center
  1. Press Windows key + X at the same time, then choose Network Connections.
  2. Choose Network and Sharing Center on the right side of the pane.
  3. Find your connection, then click it to view its detailed information.
  4. Click Properties. Locate Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP /IPv6).
  5. Click to un-tick the box before this option. Then click OK to save the change.
  6. Restart your computer to see if this problem continues.
Fix #4: Reset the windows update component
If the issue still persists, I recommend you to reset the windows update component manually. Resetting Windows Update Components will fix corrupt Windows Update Components and help you to install the Updates quickly. Follow the below steps:
  1. Press Windows Key + X on the keyboard and then select “Command Prompt (Admin)” from the menu.
  2. Stop the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. To do this, type the following commands at a command prompt. Press the ENTER key after you type each command.
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop cryptSvc
    net stop bits
    net stop msiserver
  3. Now rename the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folder. You can do this by typing the following commands in the Command Prompt. Press the ENTER key after you type each command.
  4. Now, let’s restart the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. Type the following commands in the Command Prompt for this. Press the ENTER key after you type each command.
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop cryptSvc
    net stop bits
    net stop msiserver
  5. Type Exit in the Command Prompt to close it and then restart the computer.
