This Windows Update error 8024402C is caused by the incorrect proxy or firewall settings that is preventing Windows Update Services from connecting the Internet. Here’s the resolutions for the issue:

Method 1: Remove invalid characters from the proxy exception list and then clear the proxy cache:

  1. Open “Internet Explorer”.
  2. On the Tools, select “Internet Options”.
  3. Click on the “Connections” tab.
  4. Click on the “LAN Settings”.
  5. Click on the “Advanced” button.
  6. Please delete any entry in the Exceptions section.
Next, clear your proxy cache:
  1. Click on “Start”, and then click “Run”.
  2. Type “cmd” in the Open box to get a DOS prompt.
  3. Type “proxycfg –d” at the command prompt, and press Enter.
  4. Type “net stop wuauserv” at the command prompt, and press Enter.
  5. Type “net start wuauserv” at the command prompt, and press Enter.
  6. Now try the site again.

Method 2: Reconfigure or update your firewall program: Double-check the “Proxy/Firewall” settings. Add the following urls to the exception list within your Firewall/Proxy: http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com https://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com http://download.windowsupdate.com

Method 3: Enable the “Automatically detect settings” option in Internet Explorer.

  1. Open “Internet Explorer”, click “Internet Options” on the “Tools” menu. If the “Tools” menu is unavailable in Internet Explorer, press the ALT key to display the menu.
  2. Click “LAN Settings” on the “Connections” tab, next click to select the “Automatically detect settings” check box, and then click “OK”.
  3. At last, try to install the Windows updates again to check.

Method 4: Try the following in an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Click “Start”.
  2. Type “cmd”(without the quotes).
  3. Right click on “cmd.exe” .
  4. Left click “Run as Administrator”.
  5. Type each of the following lines, followed by the “Enter” or “Return” key.
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop cryptSvc

    net stop bits
net stop msiserver
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

    ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

    net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc

    net start bits
net start msiserver

  • If you have wired internet, check to see that the cable is plugged in. (That’s how I got the error.)

  • Resolved by disabling Network Bridge Updates now working, thank you
