While you are installing Updates on Windows, the Windows Update error 80246005 message may pops up on your computer screen. If the error occurs, the files can not be saved in the Catroot2 folder possibly, or the Cryptographic Service is not working correctly or even is not started. To fix the error, try the following steps:
  1. Click the “Start” button, and then type “command prompt” in the search box.
  2. Right-click the “Command Prompt” program and click “Run as administrator”.
  3. Type “attrib -h -s -r c:\windows\system32\catroot2” and then press “Enter” keyboard button.
  4. Next, type “attrib -h -s -r c:\windows\system32\catroot2\*.* ” and then press “Enter” keyboard button.
  5. Next, type “Exit” and then press “Enter” keyboard button to close “Command Prompt” windows.
  6. Click the “Start” button again, and then type “Services.msc” in the search box.
  7. Click “Services” program and then open the “Services” windows.
  8. On the right list of the services, find and right-click “Windows Update”, and then click available “Start” or “Restart”.
  9. Back on right list of the services, find and right-click “Cryptographic Services”, and then click available “Start” or “Restart”.
  10. Close the “Services” windows, restart computer and then reinstall Windows Updates.
